After I found out UM monthly electricity bill is RM2.2 million, I dig out my 2009 final year project to find out more about how much did 12 residential colleges of UM contribute to UM total electricity bill.

Please refer to the table below for 12 Residential Colleges 2009 annual electricity consumption:

First and far most, let assume the electricity consumption and number of residents in year 2009 is same with current year.

Current total monthly electricity consumption will be 7,051,282.05 kWh(RM2,200,000/RM0.312* with working backward) and annual consumption will be 84,615,384.6 kWh (7,051,282.05 kWh X12 months). Therefore, 12 residential colleges contribute 12.54% of total UM total electricity bill with total RM 3,310,893.8 annually and average of each resident’s electric consumption will be 76kWh or RM23.9 per month.

In my opinion, above calculation shall be lower as I exclude maximum demand limit charges which is RM25.9 for each kilowatt of maximum demand per month and if UM is under TNB C1 Tariff. Therefore, I think that electricity consumption of 12 residential colleges are not so high as mostly of the rooms are not air-conditioned and residents mostly only stay at room during night and away during semester break. To be more accurate in estimating electricity consumption in building, we shall calculate based on Energy Efficiency Index or Building Energy Intensity which is kWh/M2/year and exclude GFA of car park and data center. EEI of office building that operate 55 hours per week should be not more than 200-250 kWh/ M2/year.

From the brief estimation, I believe major energy consumption will be the street and corridor lighting that operate for 12 hours, air-conditioned office and lecture halls, labs that have fridges for experiments, computer lab and etc and there are around 300 buildings in UM excluding 12 residential colleges (estimate there are 8 buildings in each residential colleges).

In conclusion, above calculation is my imagination and rough estimation based on my current knowledge. Feel free to comment for further discussion. Thanks you.

Special thanks to PHD tutor of Environment Audit class, year 2009/2010 semester 2 that provided 12 residential colleges electricity consumption, really appreciated.
